It has been described as the most extravagant monument ever built for love, for the emperor was heartbroken when Mumtaz died after 17 years of marriage, during the birth of her 14th child. (Taj Mahal remains close on Fridays). History reveals that Emperor Shah Jahan got this idea to Built a Most Fascinating building for his wife, when he was spending his periods of exile in Jagmandir Palace  at Udaipur due to his revolt with his father. He was given shelter by the Maharanas of Udaipur and in exchange he gifted his Turban to the then Maharana of Mewar as a honor to his friendship, which is still kept at City Palace Museum at Udaipur. Later when he became Emperor, he invited many architects and finally this present design was approved. It is a general conception that it was originally supposed to built in Black Stones but the then Maharaja of Jaipur has insisted him to built it in White Marble Stones which were easily available at Makrana, closer to Jaipur. He also offered him a land from his territory on the bank of Yamuna river, where this monument presently stands.
